DZ 8510:2026 Testing and decontamination of methamphetamine-contaminated properties

Overview

NZS 8510:2017 Testing and decontamination of methamphetamine-contaminated properties has been reviewed and updated to align with the new regulations to manage methamphetamine contamination in rental properties covered by the Residential Tenancies Act 1986, that came into force in April 2026.

The draft revised standard (DZ 8510:2026) has been reviewed and updated to reflect current scientific evidence and support a risk-based, proportionate approach to managing methamphetamine residue in residential properties.

We encourage feedback that considers how the proposed changes would support effective, practical, and evidence-based outcomes for all affected parties, including tenants, property owners, housing providers, insurers, the property sector, and testing and decontamination professionals. Feedback helps to ensure the revised standard is clear, fit for purpose, and capable of supporting confidence, consistency, and understanding across the sector.

Please note we are not seeking feedback on the regulations and testing levels to manage methamphetamine contamination in rental properties covered by the Residential Tenancies Act 1986, that came into force in April 2026.
