DR Amendment No.1 to AS/NZS 60335.2.40:2025 Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety - Part 2.40: Particular requirements for electrical heat pumps, air-conditioners and dehumidifiers

Overview

We are consulting on the following draft amendment to mitigate identified safety issues in the existing AS/NZS standard, AS/NZS 60335.2.40:2025 Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 2.40: Particular requirements for electrical heat pumps, air-conditioners and dehumidifiers.

The proposed amendment to the standard was prepared by Australian/New Zealand Joint Technical Committee EL-002 Safety of household and similar electrical appliances and small power transformers and power supplies.

Amendment No. 1 to AS/NZS 60335.2.40:2025 was originally drafted as DR 26018 Amendment No.1 to AS/NZS 60335.2.40:2025 in response to an enquiry raised with the committee regarding appliances with adjustable controls that remain accessible after the removal of covers. The concern was that users could be exposed to live parts or parts having only basic insulation.

The amendment has since been expanded to include additional safety requirements and hazard mitigation measures identified following a fatal incident in which a service technician came into contact with live parts while carrying out fault-finding work on an installed air conditioner.

These additional requirements were initially developed as a separate proposal, DR 26023 Amendment No. 2 to AS/NZS 60335.1:2022, and it was released for public comment. Following consideration of the comments received, the committee agreed that the requirements would be incorporated into an amendment of AS/NZS 60335.2.40:2025, rather than AS/NZS 60335.1:2022.

As a result, the content of DR 26018 Amendment No.1 to AS/NZS 60335.2.40:2025 and DR 26023 Amendment No. 2 to AS/NZS 60335.1:2022 has been consolidated and redrafted into a single project, DR 26035 Amendment No. 1 to AS/NZS 60335.2.40:2025, allowing this revision project to continue without undue delay.

The text originally developed under DR 26018 Amendment No.1 to AS/NZS 60335.2.40:2025 has already been reviewed and finalised by the committee and is shown as underlined text in the draft amendment available on this page.

The purpose of this public consultation is to seek comment only on the additional text that is not underlined.
