Adoption of 10 international Geographic Information standards

Closes 1 Jun 2025

Opened 1 May 2025

Overview

We are consulting on the adoption of 10 international Geographic Information standards.

What are the international identical adoptions about?

The ISO 19000 series is a family of international standards focused on geographic information (GI) and geospatial technologies and provides a framework for managing and using geographic data. It covers various aspects of geographic information, including data models, metadata, data exchange, and quality management.

The standards provide a common language and foundational layer for procurement, operations, development of processes and applications.

It is expected that the adoption of these standards will enable New Zealand users to have confidence that the standards are suitable for adoption and use in New Zealand.

Regulators may choose to adopt the standards as part of a regulatory framework, or they may remain voluntary and can be referenced as international good practice.

Likewise, organisations may choose to specify adherence or require accreditation to a standard to support procurement or supply chain management.
